What's New in...Old Town Warrenton
SnapshotWarrenton, Fauquier County's seat of government and largest incorporated town, was named after a popular school in the area, the Warren Academy. Gen. Joseph Warren was responsible for sending Paul Revere on his ride into history during the Revolutionary War. Warren died in 1775 at Bunker Hill.
At the heart of Warrenton's Old Town sits the County Courthouse and other historic buildings housing other county offices. Main Street in Old Town has been undergoing a renaissance of sorts, as older buildings receive facelifts and new shops and restaurants open. New parks also are finding a place in Warrenton.
Warrenton has a strong ecological and environmental conscience; it is a designated Tree City USA and a Chesapeake Bay Partner community. And one can't forget Warrenton's place in history either. Its historic residential district comprises homes built before the Civil War. One of the most famous town residents was Confederate Col. John Singleton Mosby, the "Gray Ghost" of the Confederate cavalry.
When Warrenton's Mosby Foundation completes its restoration of the Mosby home, the property will house a museum as well as serve as the location for the county's new visitors' center and Chamber of Commerce offices.
